Institute for Clinical and Experimental Transfusion Medicine IKET
The Institute for Clinical and Experimental Transfusion Medicine ("IKET") is engaged in a variety of main focal points of research. These run parallel to each other:
On the one hand, we are working on the research and employment of mesenchymal stem cells, as well as their extraction, portrayal, purification and effects. A further objective is the research of how these cells in particular are affected by diagnostic procedures such as contrast agents or other similar agents. This work is carried out in co-operation with other departments at the University Hospital Tübingen.
On the other hand, we also produce microchips for the analysis of gene expression, with which one can examine which genes are involved in certain stress situations or disease conditions. These are, for example, employed for issues involving sports medicine (training control, protection against overstrain). In collaboration with the field of oncological surgery, this technology is also employed for the analysis of various forms of cancer. The set objective is the classification of the grade of malignancy and new treatment possibilities.
A major focal point of research is also in the biosensor technology working group. In this group a novel diagnostic procedure for use in medical biological issues is being developed in collaboration with Industry. This method is based on oscillating crystals with biological layers which can convert the coupling of certain molecules to specific electrical signals.
