Center for Cleft Palate & Craniofacial Malformations

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) of varying degrees of severity, changes in the facial appearance of children with Down Syndrome, Pierre Robin sequence, and other oral-facial clefts and associated syndromes constitute congenital infantile malformations of the facial region. Their treatment is especially promising if it is already started in the first days after the birth of the child.

As crucial functions such as respiration, nutrition, speech and hearing are also affected by these disorders, all the requisite specialists from diverse specialist disciplines work together at our Center: In the early stages the treatment is carried out mainly by the paediatricians from the neonatology department and by the orthodontists. They are then joined by the oral surgeons. As and when required, these specialists are supported by radiologists (magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography), otolaryngologists, ophthalmologists, neurosurgeons and human geneticists.

The parents of our patients are fully integrated into the treatment of their children. This helps to ensure that they are in a position to be able to continue with their child's therapy once their child is back at home. We are aware that the parents of such affected children are under great psychological strain. The staff of our psychosocial services are therefore also at the parents' disposal to provide them with any advice or support they may require after their child has been discharged.
