The Ethics Committee works on the basis of the Code of Medical Ethics, the revised Declaration of Helsinki of the General Assembly of the World Medical Association and the applicable law. Upon request, it advises on ethical and legal aspects of medical research involving human subjects.
Area of responsibility
The Ethics Committee at the Medical Faculty of the Eberhard Karls University and at the University Hospital of Tübingen is responsible for medical research projects involving human subjects that are carried out at the University Hospital of Tübingen or at the Medical Faculty of the University of Tübingen, including the associated academic teaching hospitals, by a member of the Medical Faculty as defined in § 9 LHG.
It also performs the tasks assigned to an ethics committee under public law by federal or state law. These result from the AMG, the MPDG, the Radiation Protection Act (Sections 40 ff. AMG, Sections 32 ff. MPDG, Sections 32 ff. StrlSchG) and the relevant EU regulations (Regulation (EU) 2017/745, Regulation (EU) No. 536/2014, Regulation (EU) 2017/746), among others
Important information on applying for advice on multicenter studies in accordance with Section 15 of the Professional Code of Conduct for Physicians (BO)
a) multicenter studies - "One study - one vote"
The German Medical Association (BÄK) and the Working Group of Medical Ethics Committees in the Federal Republic of Germany (AKEK) have adopted a procedure for the nationwide standardization of professional advice on research projects: For multi-center medical studies, a single vote by an ethics committee established under state law should be sufficient.
With the current amendment to Section 15 of the Professional Code of Conduct for Physicians in Baden-Württemberg, this procedure will also be applied in Baden-Württemberg from September 1, 2025.
In Section 15, the following paragraph 2 (new) has been inserted after paragraph 1:
"(2) If consultation has already taken place in accordance with paragraph 1, physicians shall notify their participation in this research project to the ethics committee responsible for them under state law, providing evidence of the consultation that has taken place."
- For multi-center studies with a study center in Tübingen, please use the standardized application forms of the AKEK (application dossier, https://www.akek.de/sonstige-studien/).
- If UKT centers/clinics are involved in a multicenter study, a notification dossier(https://www.akek.de/sonstige-studien/ ) must be submitted to the Ethics Committee of the Medical Faculty of the University of Tübingen.
- The amendment dossier (see https://www.akek.de/sonstige-studien/) should be used for amendment notifications.
b) Change in the submission of digital application documents: Introduction of ethikPool
On 01.09.2025 ethikPool will be activated in Tübingen. From this date, we ask that applications to the Ethics Committee be submitted via ethikPool. Information on submitting applications and ethikPool can be found here
