The centralized biobank of the Medical Faculty of the Eberhard-Karls University of Tübingen is located at the M3 research building and is currently under construction. The aim of the biobank is to provide researchers in Tübingen and beyond with high-quality biosamples. For this purpose, both human and animal biosamples are processed according to standardized processes and stored long-term under optimzed, quality-controlled conditions. The biobank serves the entire spectrum of research areas at the MFT and the UKT.
About us
Implementation Status
- The Core Facility Biobank is currently under construction. Initially, a requirements assessment under involvement of the whole professorate at the MFT was carried out. You can find the results from the requirements assessment survey in our Just Social. The results from this assessment then are translated into the plan for a pilot phase. First samples from research will presumably be accepted by mid 2026.

Equipment
The heart of the biobank will be the fully automated -80 degree ultra-low temperature storage system, which can store two million samples at the same time. Compared to the use of conventional ultra-low temperature freezers, the larger unit saves both personnel resources and energy. In addition of handling samples, the Core Facility Biobank will also provide scientific advice on the use of samples.
