Academic Career and Appointments
at the Medical Faculty

Appointments

We support all appointment procedures for filling professorial positions, from strategic preparations and structural and financing issues to the academic selection process and the creation of an appointment list. As part of appointment negotiations, we actively participate in the preparation of offers regarding equipment and remuneration for professorships and, above all, support international professors in their onboarding process. In addition, we supervise various evaluations of professorships and are significantly involved in the further development of faculty structures.

Our team has extensive experience at the national and international level, particularly in the areas of higher education and science management, research, consulting, project management, and administration, which we have acquired at universities and non-university research institutions, in public administration, with funding agencies, and in the private sector.

We are happy to contribute our knowledge and experience to addressing your concerns and to the further development of the Medical Faculty and the University Hospital of Tübingen.

The Dean's Office may propose to the Rector's Office that retired W3 professors be awarded the title of “senior professor” as an academic honor for a limited period of time.

The conferral of the title “senior professor” has no consequences under civil service, remuneration, pension, labor, or insurance law; it does not establish an employment relationship; however, the Rectorate treats applications from senior professors for the provision of resources for research in the same way as applications from active professors.

Requirements

Important role in research networks, e.g. as

  • Spokesperson for a research training group (DFG)
  • Project management in a cluster of excellence
  • Project management in a Collaborative Research Center (SFB)

Significant and above-average acquisition of third-party funding, which requires the continued involvement of the person concerned over a longer period of time.

Grundordnung der Universität (Seite 19)

Richtlinie des Rektorats zur Vergabe der Bezeichnung Seniorprofessorin und Seniorprofessor (Seite 31)

Procedure

A subject representative applies to the dean's office for the award of a senior professorship.

karriere.dekanat@med.uni-tuebingen.de

The following documents are required:

  • Cover letter
  • Academic CV of the person to be awarded the senior professorship
  • Proof of the above requirements

The dean's office reviews the application and, if appropriate, decides to submit the application for the award of senior professorship to the university.

The appointment is made by the rector's office.

Persons with proven expertise who, for example, hold a management position at a non-university research institution may be appointed as honorary professors by the university. The appointment is for an indefinite period, but may be revoked by the university if justified. These individuals may use the title “honorary professor.” Honorary professors must teach 2 SWS (student teaching hours per week) and may also participate in examinations and research.

Requirements
  • The person is habilitated or has achieved equivalent qualifications (see § 47 LHG).
  • The person is not employed by the University of Tübingen in a full-time position as a university lecturer or private lecturer.
  • The person must have at least three years of independent teaching experience at a university.

Procedure

You or a member of the faculty submit the application together with the application documents to the dean's office.

dekanat@med.uni-tuebingen.de

The following documents are required:

  • Letter of motivation
  • Scientific CV
  • Proof of academic qualifications
  • List of publications

The faculty's honorary commission reviews the application and forwards it to the faculty council if appropriate.

The faculty council of the medical faculty and the senate of the University of Tübingen review the fulfillment of the requirements in two meetings, taking external expert opinions into account.

The appointment as honorary professor is made by the rector.

Professors may become members in faculties other than their own or at another university through co-optation.

Co-opted members of the University of Tübingen have the same rights and obligations as professors appointed to the Faculty of Medicine; they are eligible to vote in both their original faculty and the Faculty of Medicine, but cannot be elected as dean of the Faculty of Medicine.

Co-opted members of other universities can, for example, supervise doctoral theses at the Faculty of Medicine.

The co-opting of external professors is initially for a limited period (usually for a duration of two years) and can be extended upon request. Internal professors can be co-opted for an indefinite period.

Requirements

For professors at the University of Tübingen: scientific overlap with the research topics of the Faculty of Medicine.

For external professors: academic excellence and affiliation with a renowned university

Procedure

You or a member of the faculty submit the application for co-optation together with the application documents to the dean's office.

karriere.dekanat@med.uni-tuebingen.de

The following documents are required:

  • Letter of motivation
  • Scientific CV
  • Letter of support
  • MFT questionnaire (available on request from the Dean's Office)

The faculty council reviews the application and decides on the co-optation.

In the case of external professors, a resolution by the rectorate is also required.

The dean's office will then inform you whether your application for co-optation has been approved or rejected.

Time for research and science

In accordance with the Baden-Württemberg State Higher Education Act, professors may be temporarily released from some or all of their other duties while retaining their remuneration for specific research, teaching, and development projects, including knowledge, design, and technology transfer, as well as for practical training. Proper representation of the subject in teaching and the conduct of examinations must be ensured. As a rule, exemption can only be granted for one semester and at the earliest four years after the end of the last exemption. The university rectorate decides on the application for exemption.

Procedure
  • The application form for approval of a research semester can be downloaded from the university intranet.
  • Please submit the completed application to the Dean's Office. karriere.dekanat@med.uni-tuebingen.de
  • The Dean's office checks whether the subject is adequately represented in teaching, supervision of academic work, and participation in examinations.
  • The application is then submitted to the university by the Human Resources Department of the University Medical Center.
