Imaging research at the Medical Faculty of the University of Tübingen offers unique scientific and infrastructural potential. Here, cutting-edge innovations are researched and developed across all areas of imaging techniques, image processing—including applications of artificial intelligence—detector and acquisition technology, and the preclinical development of novel diagnostic and treatment concepts. Translational research in particular—that is, the transfer of knowledge from basic research to clinical practice—is facilitated through an interdisciplinary exchange among chemists, physicists, biologists, and physicians, as well as through the use of state-of-the-art imaging technologies and methodologies.

The research focus areas of imaging science at the Tübingen site include, among others, image-guided therapy and theranostics - for example, incorporating novel radiopharmaceuticals and radioligand therapies, as well as technologies such as MR-guided radiation therapy using integrated systems (MR-LINAC).
The interdisciplinary field of human neuroimaging employs magnetic resonance imaging alongside a variety of multimodal imaging approaches to understand how the brain’s microstructure and human brain functions are interrelated in health and disease.
In the area of innovative surgical imaging, Tübingen benefits from access to state-of-the-art and advanced imaging technologies. Notable here is hybrid imaging with PET/CT, including the latest generation of large-field-of-view PET scanners and PET/MRI; cutting-edge MRI applications, including high-field MRI; and the newest CT methodologies, such as functional and spectral CT using photon-counting detectors.
Modern applications of intravital microscopy in animal models as well as in cultured human tissue slices and organoids, combined with high-resolution pathology, drive innovation in cell type–specific imaging at the (sub)cellular level — for instance, visualizing living tissue during neurodegeneration, under immunotherapies, or to understand cellular interactions between tumor, immune, and stromal cells within the tumor microenvironment.
In the field of AI applications in imaging, multimodal imaging is combined with AI-powered data analysis. Here, computer-assisted extraction and analysis of a large number of features from radiological images using artificial intelligence plays a crucial role.
