Nassos Typas´ talk about how phages overcome bacterial immunity at CMFI Invited Speaker session
On 23 October 2026, the M3 Research Center in Tübingen hosted a CMFI Invited Speaker seminar featuring Nassos Typas, head of the Molecular Systems Biology Unit at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg. Typas has led his research group at EMBL since 2011 and investigates bacterial cellular networks and how bacteria interact with their environment. His research combines high-throughput approaches with mechanistic studies to uncover the molecular processes underlying bacterial biology.
In his talk, “Phages counteract bacterial immunity in myriad ways,” Typas explored the molecular arms race between bacteria and bacteriophages—viruses that infect bacteria. While bacteria have evolved diverse immune systems to defend themselves against phage attacks, phages have developed sophisticated strategies to overcome these defences.
The seminar was hosted by Lisa Maier (CMFI) and concluded with an informal reception, providing an opportunity for scientific exchange and discussion.
We thank Nassos Typas for his insightful talk and all participants for joining the event and contributing to the scientific exchange.
