Prof. Dr. Hellmut Augustin visited the M3

The scientific focus of Prof. Hellmut Augustin's work lies in the field of vascular biology, specifically in the area of research into the tumour microenvironment. He and his research group investigate the interactions between tumour cells and vascular wall cells (endothelial cells) in the course of tumour progression (angiogenesis) and metastasis. The organ-specific differentiation of endothelial cells is becoming increasingly important for understanding the control of organ function by angiocrine growth factors.

Prof. Augustin is one of the founders of this field (Augustin HG, Koh GY. A systems view of the vascular endothelium in health and disease. Cell. 2024 Sep PMID: 39241746.)

He was the first to produce vascular organoids and characterise their differentiation. The vascular biology research laboratory headed by Augustin focuses in particular on the processes of blood vessel maturation and the role of the angiopoietin/Tie signalling system in normal and impaired organ function. Augustin has been the spokesperson for the DFG Collaborative Research Centre since 2019 as well.

Augustin has been Director of the European Centre for Angioscience (ECAS) since 2018. In addition, Augustin has been spokesperson for the DFG Collaborative Research Centre Vascular Control of Organ Function since 2019 and is chairman and founding member of the Association for Scientific Conferences in Biomedicine e. V.. In 2017 Prof. Hellmut Augustin recieved the Advanced Grant of the European Research Council (ERC).

Prof. Augustin has published over 200 scientific papers in the fields of vascular biology and tumour biology. His work has been cited more than 20,000 times.

We thank Prof. Augustin a lot for the new input and the inspiring discussions that took place during as well as after the official talk he gave.
