Prof. Dr. Nisar Peter Malek has been awarded the Order of Merit of Baden-Württemberg

1. Prof. Dr Nisar Peter Malek, Medical Director of Internal Medicine I at the University Medical Centre and Medical Director of the M3 Research Institute in Tübingen, has been awarded the Order of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg by Minister-President Winfried Kretschmann. In doing so, the state is honouring a scientist and doctor who has had a significant influence on personalised cancer medicine in Germany and has made decisive advances in this field, particularly in Tübingen and Baden-Württemberg. The Order of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg is awarded for “outstanding services to the State of Baden-Württemberg”, particularly in the political, social, cultural and economic spheres. In total, only 1,000 living individuals may hold the honour at any one time.

As one of 27 honourees in this round, Prof. Malek received the award last week at the New Palace in Stuttgart. At the ceremony, Minister-President Winfried Kretschmann emphasised that the honourees serve as role models for others through their work and commitment, which benefits the community. In its press release, the State Ministry writes of Prof. Malek: “Through his work, Prof. Malek contributes in many ways to Baden-Württemberg’s reputation as a centre of innovation in personalised medicine.”

In his work, Prof. Malek consistently combines the pursuit of scientific excellence with tangible improvements that directly benefit patients. He himself emphasises, however, that this cannot be achieved alone. “Receiving the Order of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg is a great honour for me and touches me deeply,” he said after the event. “I see this award not only as a personal honour, but also as recognition for the many people with whom I have had the privilege of working over the past years. I would therefore like to express my heartfelt thanks to all my colleagues at the University Hospital and the Faculty of Medicine in Tübingen, as well as beyond.”
