Mouse pathology

Genetically modified animal models, especially transgenic and knock-out mice, have become a central tool in biomedical research in recent years. For the optimal analysis of mouse models, the correct interpretation of macroscopic, histological, immunophenotypic and ultrastructural changes by morphologically trained experts is of great importance. In order to accommodate the rapid increase of animal models also at the Medical Faculty of the University of Tübingen, a core facility for mouse pathology was established at the Department of General Pathology and Pathological Anatomy, which is co-supported by the IZKF. It is part of the overall concept of the mouse clinic Tübingen. The range of services includes the complete macroscopic and histopathological processing and evaluation of mouse models using all relevant techniques (immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy etc.).

About us

Management of the Core Facility

Professor Dr Leticia Quintanilla-Martinez de Fend

Senior physician at the Institute of Pathology has very extensive experience in the interpretation of mouse models. From 2000-2008 she was head of the mouse pathology department at the Institute of Pathology of the Helmholtz Zentrum München and the pathology screen of the German Mouse Clinic (GMC) and established several special procedures for the analysis of mouse models. Professor Quintanilla-Fend is involved in the establishment of standards in the pathology of mouse models within EU networks.

Further Information

Mouse pathology is primarily available to employees of the medical faculty. Scientists from other faculties of the University of Tübingen and other scientific institutions can also use the facility, depending on the available capacity. For this purpose, other cost rates are calculated to take into account the share of the faculty.

The Institute of Pathology provides the core facility with rooms and all equipment necessary for its operation for shared use. This includes a preparation station, embedding machines, microtomes and staining machines including a Ventana Discovery immune staining machine. The electron microscopy laboratory facilities and the microdissection facility (PALM) can also be used.

Services of mouse pathology

The material costs are charged to the users of the core facility. For larger projects, special agreements can be made (e.g. lump sum prices for the entire project). Only the services actually rendered at the core facility will be invoiced. The prices are graduated according to user groups (Medical Faculty Tübingen, other faculties, other scientific institutions, industry). For information on pricing please contact PD Dr. Quintanilla-Fend.

The supervising pathologist(s) generally make an independent scientific contribution to the project, including writing the relevant passages (methods and results) with a claim to co-authorship. Any use of the findings WITHOUT the consent of the management of the core facility or the supervising pathologist is not permitted. This does not apply to projects for which only an already established technical routine service was used without development work or interpretation of findings.
