InvestBW - EndoPAL-i

The aim of the EndoPAL-i project is the development of a compact physical plasma device to generate plasma-activated fluids (PAL). As a joint project with 5 industrial collaboration partners, it focuses on two main applications:

1.) Intraoperative adhesion prophylaxis (see also EndoPAL) and

2.) innovative technique for water decontamination.

We aim to develop a system that can be integrated into the network of existing endoscopic devices to apply sterile PAL during laparoscopic surgeries and thereby prevent the occurrence of postoperative adhesions. By this, plasma activation of liquids can be realized shortly before its application during the surgery, thereby combining the advantages of PAL (flexible application, also in less accessible regions in the human body) with direct plasma (still incorporating short living species) and thereby creating an enhanced effect on the tissue. (Patent: PCT/EP2021/053911)

Concerning water contamination Legionella is stated as main health risk factor for humans (WHO). Usually, it is transmitted via the inhalation of aerosols from contaminated water and can lead to severe pneumonia and even death.

Currently, for the decontamination only very complex and time-consuming treatment options exist, such as chemical treatments or UV treatments. To enable the treatment of water pipelines in private households and industry, our system can be integrated in the drinking water supply to prevent bacterial contamination.
