Interprofessional education and research in nursing education are relevant areas of research within the Department of Nursing Science. These areas are integral to the advancement of the field of nursing science.
Interprofessional Education has received increasing focus worldwide over the past two decades. One of the reasons for this is that interprofessional instruction during undergraduate training can, among other benefits, lead to increased patient safety through interprofessional collaboration in clinical care. Research in interprofessional education in Germany is still in its infancy. At the Tübingen Medical Faculty, we aim to build upon existing efforts and contribute to the further establishment of interprofessional education in Tübingen.
Research in Nursing Education: The new Nursing Professions Act of 2020 in Germany enables the possibility of acquiring an academic nursing degree at a university resulting also in a state qualification as a nurse. Before, state qualification could only be achieved through established nursing apprenticeship programs.
It is important that research accompanies the implementation of this new form of nursing education and qualification in Germany. This can provide valuable insight into the impact of this reform on nursing students, nursing apprentices, and state qualified nurses within healthcare and education. With this research, we can highlight the positive aspects and processes within the academic nursing program while also identifying specific challenges that need to be addressed in the long-term development of theory and practice in the academic program.
