The number of patients requiring professional nursing care is increasing due to demographic change, the associated multimorbidity and technical developments in medicine. The resulting (highly) complex nursing situations in clinical and outpatient care require a further development of the tasks and responsibilities of professional nursing. Nurses are already often involved in the organization and coordination of care. To ensure good and safe patient care in all settings, expanding the tasks and roles of professional nurses as well as digitalization and interprofessional collaboration can be promising approaches. Projects in the field of nursing care research and support for nursing care through digitalization should advance the discipline of nursing science.
