On 20 October 2016, the new building of the University Eye Hospital Tübingen was put into operation. The department, consisting of the University Eye Hospital and the Research Institute of Ophthalmology, can be merged from nine locations to just one thanks to the new building. Important synergies between the Eye Hospital and the Research Institute can thus be positively influenced. As a university science center, the Eye Clinic and the Research Institute jointly research eye diseases and develop new therapeutic methods.
Building

The new building had become necessary because the University Eye Hospital Tübingen, which had been in existence since 1909 and had been constantly adapted over time to the given circumstances of increasing patient numbers and structural innovations, had reached its limit after 100 years. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary in 2009, efforts were made to build a new building. In accordance with the chosen motto "Looking to the future together", the focus was placed on a new building that would bring together the Eye Clinic and the Research Institute for Ophthalmology in one building. The Department of Ophthalmology was spread over nine locations in Tübingen, which had an unfavourable effect on necessary synergy effects. Another decisive factor was that clinical care at the Eye Clinic had reached its limits. During the anniversary year, the public and political representatives were made aware of the need for a new building by means of numerous events.
