Many adolescents show reduced sleep duration. This shortening is mainly due to a delay in sleep onset. Especially in the time before bedtime, adolescents increasingly use their smartphones. The smartphone as a source of light and exciting information can further delay the time to fall asleep. Since sleep supports memory consolidation, it is possible that smartphone use affects the consolidation of previously learned material. This was investigated in the research project. After encoding, adolescents used their smartphone for social media or read a book (on the smartphone or bound) before going to bed. We want to compare the memory performance and sleep quality of these conditions.
It will be investigated whether healthy adolescents show a lower memory performance after using their smartphone for social media before bedtime compared to reading a book (on the smartphone or bound book).
