Biobank Core Facility

The M3 is home to the centralized biobank of the Medical Faculty of the Eberhard-Karls University of Tübingen, which is currently under construction. The aim of the biobank is to provide researchers in Tübingen and beyond with high-quality biosamples. For this purpose, both human and animal biosamples are processed according to standardized processes and stored long-term under a wide variety of conditions. The biobank does not pursue a fixed focus, but serves the entire spectrum of specialist areas researched at the UKT and the MFT. The long-term goal of the biobank will be accreditation in accordance with the internationally recognized ISO 20387 standard.

The heart of the biobank is the fully automated -80 degree ultra-low temperature storage system, which can store several million samples at the same time. Compared to the use of conventional ultra-low temperature freezers, the larger unit saves both personnel resources and energy. But the biobank has also set itself ambitious goals in addition to the handling of samples. In addition to providing scientific advice on the use of samples, the declared aim is to collect a wide range of data on both the sample donors and the reuse of analysis data from biosamples generated as part of projects. The biobank's informed consent form gives patients and test subjects at the UKT and MFT the opportunity to decide for themselves whether to donate biosamples.
