Psychological test laboratory

In the psychological test laboratory, primarily neuropsychological examination procedures are used, which can contribute to psychiatric diagnostics and treatment planning. The psychological-diagnostic examination is planned, assessed and evaluated by qualified psychologists.

As a rule, the technical assistant is commissioned to carry out the tests. Neuropsychological diagnostics is usually only available in the context of inpatient treatment, as it is not adequately remunerated as an outpatient service.

Diagnostics

Examination of performance in these areas is of importance in the context of diagnosis and treatment planning for the following disorders, among others:

  • Onset dementias (quantification of preserved abilities).
  • Substance abuse (quantification of consumption-related impairment)
  • Affective disorders (determination of performance potential after remission of affective symptoms)
  • Schizophrenic disorders (quantification of psychosis-correlated cognitive impairment and determination of rehabilitation potential).
  • Intelligence impairment: determination of the extent to which general intelligence functions are impaired.

Psychological diagnosis is concerned with identifying the patient's strengths and weaknesses in various areas of performance:

  • Perception
  • attention, concentration and vigilance
  • Performance in problem-solving thinking and cognitive flexibility
  • performance of working memory, primary and secondary memory
  • Reactivity.

In addition, questionnaire procedures, e.g. on current state of mind, are presented to assess performance.

In the context of mental illnesses and as a result of treatment with psychotropic drugs, there may be restrictions on fitness to drive. There is an obligation to participate in road traffic only if one is physically and mentally able to do so.

Patients at our clinic are advised at the start of inpatient treatment that they should not drive during inpatient treatment in order to avoid problems with insurance companies. In connection with the preparation for discharge, we offer a psychological-diagnostic examination, which in particular assesses the patient's perceptual, concentration and reaction abilities.

The results of the examination, together with the diagnostic assessment at the time of discharge, can serve as evidence that the patient's fitness to drive has been restored. These questions are discussed in a consultation with the attending physician or certified psychologist.

Research projects

The test laboratory is involved in various research projects and provides the necessary infrastructure for conducting neuropsychological examinations within the framework of scientific studies. Currently, studies on schizophrenic and depressive disorders are being conducted.
