Psychotherapy Research

Psychotherapy for severe mental disorders

The working group deals with the effectiveness and mode of action of psychotherapy in severe mental disorders, especially in psychoses. According to the current state of research, it can be considered certain that psychotherapy plays an important role in the treatment of severe mental disorders. However, research in this area is underdeveloped. With the help of substantial funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the working group has succeeded in establishing a research programme on psychotherapy in psychoses that focuses on different treatment phases and treatment priorities. Multicentre, randomised, clinical studies allow statements on efficacy at a high level and enable further research into the mode of action of these treatment strategies.

Current projects

CARE stands for computer-assistedrisk evaluationand risk-adapted treatment in cases of increased risk of developing psychosis. It is a new form of clinical care, the effectiveness of which is being investigated in a clinical trial. The aim is to use these measures to prevent the onset of psychosis and/or improve social and occupational performance.

Funded by the Innovation Fund of the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA). The project is led by Heinrich-Heine University/ LRV Düsseldorf and is being carried out in 9 federal states.

Since the beginning of 2007, the research network on psychotherapy of psychotic syndromes has been funded by the BMBF. It consists of a central multicentre clinical study and various associated research projects. The projects of the network are intended to provide information about the effectiveness and mode of action of the psychotherapy carried out, about neurobiological and neuropsychological correlates of the symptomatology and the effect of the therapy as well as the health economic evaluation. The network is headed by Prof. Dr. Klingberg.

More about the study

The clinical study compares Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (experimental condition) and Cognitive Remediation (control condition) for their effectiveness with regard to the negative symptomatology of schizophrenia. The central aim of the study is to investigate whether Cognitive Behavioral Therapy produces a reduction in negative symptomatology in schizophrenic disorders. The study design is multicenter (University Hospitals Tübingen, Frankfurt and Düsseldorf), prospective, single-blind, randomized and controlled.

The Competence Center Psychotherapy at the Medical Faculties of Baden-Württemberg is funded by the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts Baden-Württemberg through the Innovation Fund Medicine. The aim is to improve psychotherapeutic patient care, research and teaching. This is achieved through the close networking of the University Hospitals of Freiburg, Heidelberg, Mannheim and Tübingen with their particular clinical and scientific competences and specializations.

More about the competence network

The Competence Network Schizophrenia is a network of university and health care institutions funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, which both conducts research projects at an international level and promotes the implementation of new findings in everyday treatment.

The competence network is currently in its third funding phase, which focuses on the transfer of research results into care.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Initial Schizophrenic Disorders

Within the framework of the Competence Network Schizophrenia, a multicenter clinical study was conducted on the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy in first-episode patients with schizophrenic disorders. A comprehensive CBT was compared with a short, outpatient, psychoeducational single intervention. Efficacy is assessed by 2-year follow-up. The results are currently under review.

Psychotherapy Process Research

The psychotherapy conducted in the initial illness study is currently being intensively analyzed. Methods of psychotherapy process research are used for this purpose. In particular, the reasons for therapy discontinuation, the importance of therapist-patient interaction, and the question of optimal strategies for setting goals and priorities in therapy are being investigated. These analyses are being funded by the BMBF as part of the third funding period.

Transfer projects

The third funding phase of the competence network is intended to improve the transfer between research and care. To this end, initiatives such as further education programs and the establishment of competence centres for first-episode disorders are currently being prepared.
