Once you have started in Tübingen the following requirements apply:
- To get the German "Facharzt" you do have to follow our rotation-system and pass the "Kenntnissprüfung" (equivalent to the German medical state examination) during the first one and a half years of the residency training.
Guest residents who do not pass the "Kenntnisprüfung" within this time will be required to leave the programm.
- The time spent at our hospital for the training before passing the "Kenntnisprüfung" most likely will be recognized for the complete training period. Thus, if you do pass the "Kenntnisprüfung" within the provided time, you should be able to obtain your "Facharzt" within 5 to 6 years after your arrival.
- You are going to have the same hands-on experience, clinical exposure, on call and teaching as your fellow German doctors as soon as you are able to speak German accurately and are able to conduct adequate conversations with our patients and staff.
However, you should be aware that German and guest residents (with the exception of the intravitreal injections) are not taught advanced intraocular surgery during these five years (e.g. you will not be able to learn and to perform cataract surgery during residency - in Germany training in intraocular surgery requires the completion of post residency fellowships).
