Information for patients from abroad
In its 17 hospitals and 37 specialist departments, the University Hospital treats almost 70.000 in-patients annually in virtually every specialist medical field. Furthermore, nearly 240.000 patients are treated in the Hospital Clinic outpatient departments. The University Hospital Tübingen, as one of the major centres for medical treatment of the very highest standard, is renowned well beyond the borders of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The decision to treat patients from abroad lies within the responsibility of the Medical Directors of the individual specialist departments. We therefore recommend that you contact the respective specialist department as soon as possible, in order to ascertain which options for treatment are available.

Tübingen is situated approximately 35 km from Stuttgart Airport, and can be reached via an expressway by car in 20 minutes. Travelling to Tübingen by taxi will cost you approximately 40 Euro. A bus service which operates several times a day is an additional option.
All the University Hospitals - whether in the vicinity of the town centre or on the Schnarrenberg - can be reached easily with route 5 of the urban bus service (TÜ-Bus), as, for example, from the main railway station. Taxis are, of course, also available.
Tübingen has a number of hotels of varying categories. Should you require hotel accommodation, we recommend that you make your reservation via Tübingen's citizens' advice bureau and tourist information office (Bürger- und Verkehrsverein Tübingen)
In the University Hospitals on the Schnarrenberg and in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics you will be accommodated in two-bed rooms. Subject to availability, single rooms are offered as an optional additional benefit.
In the Department of Dermatology, the Centre for Ophthalmology, the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, and in the Department of Medicine, Department I, the standard accommodation for patients is in multi-bed rooms.
Accommodation in two-bed or single rooms is possible as an optional additional benefit in these hospitals. The surcharge for the two-bed or single room optional additional benefit is listed in our Hospital Fees and Nursing Charge Tariffs (Entgelt- und Pflegekostentarif), which can also be accessed on the Internet.

In addition, surcharges are invoiced for certain expensive medical services, such as blood products, special medication and special treatments, which are not adequate represented in the G-DRG catalogue.
Due to these complex invoicing regulations, it is generally not possible to present you with the final invoice on the day of your discharge. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
The hospital fees levied in accordance with G-DRG do not incorporate the option of treatment by Senior Consultants. The fees for treatment by Senior Consultants are invoiced separately by the respective Senior Consultant in accordance with the German Official Regulations for Fees for Physicians ("Gebührenordnung für Ärzte - GOÄ"), and are invoiced in addition to the hospital fees in accordance with G-DRG.
By German law, the contract for treatment by a physician of your choice, i.e., a contract for treatment by Senior Consultants, always incorporates all Senior Consultants who are consulted and involved in your treatment (e.g., anaesthesiology, laboratory medicine, radiology). These Senior Consultants will also invoice their fees separately, and their invoices will be in addition to the invoice which you will receive from the University Hospital.
The invoicing of the fees for Senior Consultants can take some time, as the calculation of these fees is carried out by external clearing offices.
In accordance with the general contractual terms of the University Hospital Tübingen, patients from abroad are required to deposit the payment for the estimated costs of their treatment into the University Hospital's account prior to their treatment, unless either a domestic health insurance scheme or a domestic third party has agreed to cover these costs.
In order to be able to determine the estimated costs, it is essential that the Hospital is given in advance as much detailed information as possible about your illness and the treatment desired. Should you wish to be treated by Senior Consultants, the costs for this will be taken into consideration when calculating the amount of your advance payment.
Should your treatment be more complex than expected (i.e., as a result of complications arising during the course of your treatment, or additional ailments which were previously unknown), the University Hospital Tübingen will issue you with a further demand for the payment of these additional costs which were not covered in your advance payment.
You will be informed of the pre-calculated estimated total cost of your treatment before you are admitted. This amount should be transferred to the Hospital Clinic's bank account with the
BIC/SWIFT SOLADES1TUB,
IBAN DE79641500200000014144
Kreissparkasse Tübingen
Bank sort code 641 500 20, account no. 14 14 4
Please state your name, or the name of the patient respectively, and the appendix "Vorauszahlung Krankenhausbehandlung" (advance payment for hospital treatment) on your bank transfer.
In exceptional circumstances a credit card will also be accepted.
After your final invoice has been calculated, any excess sums which may have been paid will be transferred back to you. We will require your bank details for this purpose.
