Division Neuropathology
At the Divsion of Neuropathology we examine tissue from the cerebral region, spinal cord, the peripheral nervous system and muscular system. The subsequent therapy for diseases is dependent on this diagnostic work. We determine, for example, whether a brain tumour also requires radiation therapy or whether follow-up treatment with chemotherapy is necessary. The treatment of inflammatory diseases, autoimmune diseases, etc depends likewise solely on these examinations.
The Divsion of Neuropathology carries out this diagnostic work as part of a system with area-wide coverage. This system involves a total of three institutes in Baden-Württemberg. Hence the University Hospital Tübingen also receives examination material from other hospitals throughout the State.
On a scientific level, new examination methods for brain tumours are being developed at the Institute in order to be able to improve medical statements in respect of prognosis and therapy. We are also interested in the research of regeneration processes in the case of cerebral infarction, traumata, inflammatory diseases and myopathy.
The examination spectrum is supplemented by our own research section for immunopathology of the nervous system.
In order to support the scientific research of diseases, our Divisions participates in a nationwide tissue database. Our advisory body is the Ethics Commission (see Brain Net).
