Research is one of the basic mandates of the University Hospital Tübingen in addition to patient care and medical education. A concentration on excellent research focus areas ensures that the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Tübingen (MFT) maintains a preeminent position in national and international rankings. Over the last few years the MFT has developed numerous instruments to raise standards in clinical research, to promote young scientists and provide them with a perspective for the future.
First whole-body MRI-PET system in Baden-Württemberg begins operations at the University Hospital Tübingen
Tübingen's whole-body MRI-PET system integrating positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is only the second of its kind world-wide and the first in Baden-Württemberg.
Funding extended for SFB 766 "The Bacterial Cell Envelope"
After a successful first four years, Collaborative Research Center SFB 766 "The Bacterial Cell Envelope: Structure, Function and Infection Interface" has passed its review and was extended for an additional four years. Speaker for the SFB is Professor Dr. Wolfgang Wohlleben of the Interfaculty Institute for Microbiology and Infection Medicine of the University of Tübingen.
The University Hospital Tübingen is now partner site in four of the six centers funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research BMBF.
The Tübingen behavioral neurobiologist Niels Birbaumer has received a grant from the Reinhart Koselleck Program of the DFG (German Research Foundation) for highly innovative research.
Birbaumer was awarded 1.25 million euros over a period of five years in addition to a program lump sum of 250,000 euros.
State Research Prize for Tübingen
Professor Dr. med. Rupert Handgretinger, Medical Director of the University Children's Hospital's Division I (General paediatrics, haematology and oncology) was awarded the Baden-Württemberg Prize for Applied Research.
Prof. Dr. med. Andreas Neu and Dr. med. Stefan Ehehalt of the University Children's Hospital have received the Menarini Prize of the German Diabetes Society DDG for their project investigating diabetes mellitus type 1 in children and adolescents. The prize, which includes a cash award of € 15,000 for research, was officially conferred in Leipzig at the 46th Annual Meeting of the DDG from June 1 to 4, 2011.

Professor Dr. Paul Enck of the University Hospital's Department of Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy, was presented with the Award for Sustained Achievement in Digestive Sciences at the annual congress of the American Gastroenterological Association AGA in Chicago.

Dr. Dr. Saskia Biskup and Dr. Natalja Funk of the Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research (HIH) have been awarded the Innovation Prize 2011 of the German BioRegions for their work on early detection of Parkinson's disease.
