Institute for Human Genetics
With the exception of some minor differences, all human-beings have the same genetic information. Yet they still differ from one another as regards their appearance, nature, behaviour and their constitution. Diseases caused by genetic aberrations are the main focal point of the Institute for Human Genetics. The Institute's tasks include consultation services for patients and their families, paternity tests, as well as diagnostics and the research of genetic diseases. Particularly in the research of neurodegenerative disorders, the Institute occupies a leading position in Germany and indeed in Europe.
The Institute for Human Genetics consists of two departments. The "Medical Genetics" department, under its Departmental Manager Prof. Dr. med. O. Rieß, is located in the "Alte Chirurgie" building at Calwerstrasse number 7. The "Molecular Genetics" department, which is run by Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. N. Blin, is accommodated in the research building at Wilhelmstrasse number 27.
