Excellence Cluster Interdisciplinary Centre for Integrative Neuroscience (CIN)

The University will now have one of the 20 Excellence Clusters within Germany. For a period of five years, the University of Tübingen will have sponsorship from the Federation and States of the Federal Republic of Germany amounting to approximately 6,5 million euros per annum at its disposal for its Excellence Cluster.
The Centre for Integrative Neuroscience (CIN) is backed by six Faculties, the Max Planck Institute of Biological Cybernetics, the Collaborative Research Centre 550, the Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research, the Graduate School of Neural and Behavioural Sciences, and numerous internal and external partners.
The most important structures which have formed the basis for the collaboration in the Excellence Cluster were several neuroscientific Collaborative Research Centres which were established in the 80's, and the successful training of graduates in the Graduate Programmes and the International Graduate School of Neural and Behavioural Science / International Max Planck Research School. These structures have been significantly strengthened by the foundation of the Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research (HIH) in 2002, with its main focus on the diagnostics and therapy of neurological disorders.
The CIN is trying to clarify in an interdisciplinary programme how our brain enables certain functions and how disorders can impair the functions of the brain. The primary objective is to decipher the information-theoretical and neuronal basis of brain performance. The programme furthermore plans to utilise the insights that have been gained to develop more effective technical applications.
The CIN's research activities comprise five complementary fields of research:
- Field A deals with the analysis of task specificity and the embodiment of cognitive processes.
- Field B consists of groups which are working on the molecular and cellular implementation of selected brain functions and the impairment caused by disorders of the brain.
- Field C focuses on the improvement of modern imaging technologies.
- The work of Field D has as its aim the development of neuroprostheses which will be utilised to replace functions which have been lost through disease.
- The work of Field E is focused on the development of technical solutions which are "brain-inspired".
In order to be able to ensure the education and training of the essential next generation of young scientists, the CIN plans to establish a graduate training centre for the promotion of neuroscientific training in integrative neuroscience.
