Bachelor Course of Studies in Molecular Medicine

Accreditation

The Accreditation Council (Foundation for the Accreditation of Study Programmes in Germany) has unconditionally approved the Bachelor course of studies in molecular medicine. Thus, the University of Tübingen can now announce its fourth accredited Bachelor programme.

Target group

The Bachelor programme in molecular medicine is certainly a good choice for students seeking a solid academic training in the natural sciences but one that incorporates medical competencies as an alternative to the more traditional study of medicine, which normally foresees a career in clinical practice. Research, especially in the area of molecular biology and cell biology, has had an immense influence on medical practice in the last few decades and is indispensable for future improvements in diagnostics and therapy.

General information

The Bachelor course of studies lasts three academic years (6 semesters/half-year terms) and ends with the university degree of Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.). Upon successful completion of the course, the B.Sc. graduates should then have the opportunity to continue their studies in the framework of the Master/PhD programme with the option of completing their doctoral degree (PhD). The Bachelor programme in molecular medicine at the University of Tübingen offers 35 places to suitable candidates each semester.

Study details and training programme

The course of studies imparts specialized knowledge of the latest research findings in molecular medicine involving a broad spectrum of cutting-edge topics. In addition, it offers comprehensive (practical) training in all methods and techniques that find application in the field of molecular biology.

Students are awarded credit points for all their achievements which, in line with the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), encompass 180 CP.
Most modules comprise both a theoretical (lecture and seminar) and practical (laboratory training) course. In the first two years (semesters 1 - 4) the modules are mandatory but in the final year (semesters 5 - 6) there is also a choice of optional modules (Wahlpflichtmodule).
High-ranking scientists are on hand to supervise students on this course and the most up-to-date laboratory equipment is at their disposal for all practical training. Indeed, during the entire course of studies, teaching staff are on site for advice and support and a team of mentors accompanies the students through every semester. The introduction of the ECTS system of credit points guarantees that the Bachelor course of studies in Tübingen is compatible with other international programmes.

Admission requirements

The general qualification for university entrance (allgemeine Hochschulreife) is a prerequisite for admission to the Bachelor course in molecular medicine. The course of studies always begins in the winter term (Wintersemester) and the University sets its own restrictions on the admission of candidates.

The Master programme provides an advanced course to complement the Bachelor course of studies; it lasts for 2 years (4 semesters/half-year terms) and culminates in the award of the M.Sc. degree. As an alternative, it is planned to offer graduates the option of participating in a three-year (6 semesters) PhD programme.
The Master programme is designed to convey specialized knowledge to students which will enable them to target professional careers in the field of molecular medicine that have a stronger scientific orientation.

The PhD programme not only provides the opportunity of completing a doctoral degree (PhD), it also incorporates advanced seminars in literature and methods, etc., to guarantee a comprehensive scientific training and education.
