Short Biography

Prof. Malek studied medicine at Hanover Medical University between 1989 and 1996, completing his doctorate with Prof. Alfred Nordheim. After entering the Hospital for Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endocrinology under the direction of Prof. Michael P. Manns, he was trained as a specialist for internal medicine and as a gastroenterologist. Sponsored by the DFG, he spent three years – from 1998 to 2001 – doing research at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle, USA, where he began his research work on molecular control of cell division. After returning to Hanover Medical University, his scientific work from 2002 to 2007 at the Institute for Molecular Biology of the MHH, under the direction of Prof. Achim Gossler, was sponsored by the Max Eder Program of German Cancer Aid. In 2008, he was appointed to a W2 professorship within the framework of the REBIRTH excellence cluster of the DFG. Prof. Malek has been the Medical Director of Medical Hospital 1 at the Tübingen University Clinical Centre since 2011. His clinical work mainly involves the treatment of malignant diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and liver along with therapy for patients with chronic liver diseases. The focus of his scientific work is decoding cell division mechanisms, with the goal of identifying new substances for treating tumour diseases. Prof. Malek was presented with the AIO Science Award in 2008 and the Johann Georg Zimmermann Prize for Cancer Research in 2009.
