Übersicht

Michael Ramharter ist Leiter der wissenschaftlichen Arbeitsgruppe "Infectious Disease Control", die am CERMEL, in Lambaréné, Gabun, am Bernhard Nocht Institut für Tropenmedizin und am UKE-Hamburg aktiv ist. Der Schwerpunkt der wissenschaftlichen Arbeit liegt in Studien zur Epidemiologie, Klinik, Therapie und Pathophysiologie von Infektionskrankheiten in den Tropen. In einer Reihe klinischer Studien wurden neue Malaria-Medikamente und Medikamentenkombinationen (Fosmidomycin, Artesunat-Clindamycin, Artesunat-Pyronaridin und Artesunat-Mefloquin ) in klinischen Studien untersucht und die Entwicklung kindgerechter Medikamentenformulierungen forciert. Ein weiterer wissenschaftlicher Schwerpunkt ist die Entwicklung neuer Präventionsstrategien gegen Infektionen während der Schwangerschaft. Hierbei liegt der Fokus neben der Malaria auch bei anderen Erkrankungen wie der urogenitalen Schistosomiasis, Filariosen, intestinaler Helminthen sowie bakterieller und viraler Ko-Infektionen.

Michael Ramharter is head of the scientific working group "Infectious Disease Control". This working group is actively involved in basic and clinical research projects at the CERMEL, Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Lambaréné, Gabon, and the Institut für Tropenmedizin, University of Tübingen. The focus of the scientific work is on the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, pathophysiology and therapy of infectious diseases in the tropics. In a series of clinical trials, new malaria drugs and drug combinations (fosmidomycin, artesunate-clindamycin, artesunate-mefloquine and artesunate pyronaridine) were evaluated in clinical trials. In this context a special emphasise is laid on the development of child-friendly drug formulations. Another research focus is the development of new prevention strategies against infections during pregnancy. Besides malaria our work includes other infectious diseases including urogenital schistosomiasis, filariasis, intestinal helminths, and bacterial and viral co-infections.Dr. Ramharter is President of the Scientific Review Committee of the CERMEL and Associate Professor in Internal Medicine at the Medical University of Vienna.
