Announcement
Call for Five Clinician Scientist Positions (f/m/d) for the MINT-CS program
The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Tübingen supports Clinician Scientists (CS) at different stages of their career (Junior CS, CS, Advanced CS).
Clinician scientists are translationally trained physicians who at the same time pursue a structured and long-term scientific career. A significant hurdle in the career of the "research clinician" is the time required to combine research and clinical work. After completing daily clinical tasks, there is rarely any time left for research. Our Clinician Scientist Program ‘Medical Innovation through Interdisciplinarity’ (MINT-CS) supports candidates with translational projects based on experimental and clinical research. It supports participants with personnel resources (fixed share of 50% of the total working time for scientific work, the remaining 50% will be covered by the host clinical department) and flexible funds (3.000 Euro per year). During the 3-year funding period, you will be trained in key skills (third-party funding acquisition, manuscript writing, leadership skills, etc.) and supported in mobility projects.
Criteria for application
- Being at least in the 3rd year of your residency/postgraduate training at the start of the program, with at least 1.5 years of specialist training left to complete.
- Doctoral degree with summa or magna cum laude
- Generally, at least 3 peer-reviewed publications, including 2 as first-author
- High quality research proposal, clearly embedded in the host research department
We understand that CVs and career paths are highly personal, and individual achievements can vary greatly. The listed entry requirements are therefore intended as general benchmarks. We encourage you to take advantage of our personalized guidance at the Clinician Scientist office, especially if you are unsure about your eligibility.

We understand that CVs and career paths are highly personal, and individual achievements can vary greatly. The listed entry requirements are therefore intended as general benchmarks. We encourage you to take advantage of our personalized guidance at the Clinician Scientist office, especially if you are unsure about your eligibility.
Important information for external applicants:
Applications from outside the UKT are possible and welcome, but the following points should be noticed: Our Junior Clinician Scientist Program promotes a scientific career in parallel with clinical training. Participation in the program is therefore only possible during your specialist training at the UKT (including employment contract). Before applying, you should therefore contact the relevant clinics or specialist departments to find out about vacancies. The Clinician Scientist Office is available to offer advice in advance and can help to put you in touch with the relevant departments if required.
Application is a two-step process. Deadline for submission of written applications is February 25th, 2026. Oral presentation of eligible projects is scheduled for April/May, 2026 (date to be announced).
Applications should be sent as summarized PDF (Complete application including attachments) by mail toannika.erbacher@med.uni-tuebingen.de
If you have any questions regarding the Clinician Scientist program, do not hesitate to contact Dr. Annika Erbacher.
Advanced Clinician Scientist - Funding program
We are currently revising our Advanced Clinician Scientist (AdvCS) Program.
The upcoming program offers habilitated physicians with an established research profile the opportunity to advance their scientific career through funded release from clinical duties. Additionally, it supports participating clinics in establishing MFT Clinician Scientist Professorships, with the goal of strengthening patient- and practice-oriented research in a sustainable way.
What’s new:
The admission requirements are being updated. In addition, the application and selection process will now be aligned with the CoARA principles, aiming to make it fairer, more transparent, and more inclusive by:
- considering a broader range of scientific achievements beyond traditional metrics,
- applying clear and transparent evaluation criteria, and
- promoting diversity and equal opportunities in research careers.
Have we sparked your interest? We would be happy to hear from you! The Clinician Scientist Office is available for individual consultations, providing guidance on eligibility criteria and addressing any queries you may have.

Clinician Scientist Baden-Württemberg Network
The Medical Faculties of Freiburg, Heidelberg, Mannheim, Ulm and Tübingen and the DKFZ share a common goal: to train outstanding scientists who combine clinical expertise with scientific excellence. This cooperation network supports clinician scientists in all partner institutions with the overarching goal of advancing translational medicine.
All institutions run structured Clinician Scientist programs and, under the Sonderlinie Hochschulmedizin (HoFV II), are building a coordinated state-wide network. The focus is on aligning content, fostering regular exchange and strengthening interdisciplinary cooperation beyond the university programs.
Clinician scientists from all institutes meet annually at the Clinician Scientist Baden-Württemberg Networking Event, the next meeting will take place in Freiburg in summer 2026 (date and details soon to follow).
