Announcement

Call for Eight Clinician Scientist Positions (f/m/d) for the German Research Foundation (DFG) funded MINT-CS program

The full time position is limited for 3 years.

The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Tübingen supports Clinician Scientists (CS) at different stages of their career (Junior CS, CS, Advanced CS).

Clinician scientists are translationally trained physicians who at the same time pursue a structured and long-term scientific career. A significant hurdle in the career of the "research clinician" is the time required to combine research and clinical work. After completing daily clinical tasks, there is rarely any time left for research. Our German Research Foundation-funded Clinician Scientist Program ‘Medical Innovation through Interdisciplinarity’ (MINT-CS) supports candidates with interdisciplinary projects that are based on experimental research. It supports participants with personnel resources (fixed share of 50% of the total working time for scientific work, the remaining 50% will be covered by the host clinical department) and flexible funds (3.000 Euro per year).

Since the start of the program in 2023, we recruited 19 excellent candidates. In the third phase of the program, starting in summer 2025, we are looking for further 8 excellent, highly motivated Clinician Scientists. During the 3 year funding period, you will be also trained in key skills (third-party funding acquisition, manuscript writing, leadership skills, etc.) and supported in mobility projects.

  • Being at least in the 3rd year of your residency/postgraduate training at the start of the program (exclusion: completed residency)
  • Doctoral degree with summa or magna cum laude
  • Generally, at least 3 peer-reviewed publications, including 2 as first-author
  • High quality research proposal, clearly embedded in the host research departmen

We understand that CVs and career paths are highly personal, and individual achievements can vary greatly. The listed entry requirements are therefore intended as general benchmarks. We encourage you to take advantage of our personalized guidance at the Clinician Scientist office, especially if you are unsure about your eligibility.

  • A 3-page research outline describing the proposed interdisciplinary project idea of excellent scientific quality (title of planned research project, clinical and natural science supervisors, project description with milestones plan, embedding into the research group, references are excluded)
  • Letter of motivation (1 page, including a brief description of past and present scientific projects and a link to the planned scientific projects)
  • Letter from the heads of the desired clinical and research host institutions and potentially other involved departments acknowledging support for the candidate at the conditions of the MINT-CS program (covering the 50% clinical share)
  • Abstract (max. 2000 characters)
  • CV
  • Copy of doctoral certificate
  • Rotation plan
  • Ethics vote and approval for animal experiments, if applicable
  • Certificate of Good Scientific Practice

The application process consists of two steps: the deadline for submitting written applications is February 23th, 2025. Candidates with eligible applications will be invited to present their projects on April 23th, 2025 (date to be confirmed).

Applications must be submitted exclusively through the designated application portal, submissions via email or the UKT job portal cannot be considered. Should you require any assistance with the submission process, we are happy to help (contact details below).

Important information for external applicants:
Applications from outside the UKT are possible and welcome, but the following points should be noticed: Our Clinician Scientist Programs promote a scientific career in parallel with clinical training. Participation in the programs is therefore only possible during your specialist training at the UKT (including employment contract). Before applying, you should therefore contact the relevant clinical departments to inquire about vacancies. The Clinician Scientist Office is available to offer advice in advance and can help to put you in touch with the relevant departments if required.

 application portal

If you have any questions regarding the entry criteria, application process or the Clinician Scientist program in general, do not hesitate to contact the MINT-CS office.

Questions regarding the application portal can be addressed to Karin Schmid.

Call for Eight Junior Clinician Scientist positions (f/m/d)

Our Junior Clinician Scientist program supports participants with personnel resources to enable them to combine research and clinical work. A fixed share of 20% of the total working time is devoted to scientific work, the other 80% remains in the host clinical department.

We are looking for 8 excellent, highly motivated Clinician Scientists in their first two years of specialization. During the funding period of two years, you will benefit from all the services offered by the Talent Academy. The proposed research project should be related to clinical, translational and/or basic sciences.

  • Being in the first two years of your residency/postgraduate training at the start of the program (to candidates from the third year of residency, we offer a DFG-funded program (MINT-CS))
  • Doctoral degree with summa or magna cum laude
  • Generally, 1 peer-reviewed publication as first author

We understand that CVs and career paths are highly personal, and individual achievements can vary greatly. The listed entry requirements are therefore intended as general benchmarks. We encourage you to take advantage of our personalized guidance at the Clinician Scientist office, especially if you are unsure about your eligibility.

Advanced Clinician Scientist - Funding program

This program offers habilitated physicians with an established research profile the opportunity to pursue their career as a clinician scientist. In addition, it supports the participating clinics in establishing MFT Clinician Scientist Professorships. The aim is to sustainably strengthen patient- and practice-oriented research topics in the respective clinics, with a particular focus on the promotion of clinical studies.

Phase I: 3 years research time over 30% (funding: 15% department, 15% MFT) and 50% technical assistance position (funding: 25% department, 25% MFT)

Phase II: After a positive interim evaluation, a further 2 years of research time over 30% (funding: 15% department, 15% MFT) and 50% technical assistance (fully funded by the host department)

Following a positive evaluation of the candidate after the first funding phase (in the 3rd year), in which scientific development, independence and visibility are demonstrably established, further funding over 2 years is possible. After a positive final evaluation (in the 5th year), the candidate is transferred to a permanent senior physician position with a research area or research section that offers permanent freedom for own research. Following the funding program, a regular evaluation is carried out every 5 years by the head of department and the Faculty of Medicine.

  • Habilitation or habilitation-equivalent achievements
  • Completed specialist training and outstanding clinical achievements
  • Publications with international visibility as first and last author
  • Proven stay at an external research institution (usually 2 years, at least 1 year)
  • Peer-reviewed external third-party funding (at least equivalent to an individual DFG proposal)
  • Very well evaluated teaching

The applicant's research profile must fit thematically into the main research areas or cross-sectional areas of the research location Tübingen.
